The F4 tornado (F5 is considered the strongest) that hit Barrie was part of a series of tornadoes that hit central Ontario claiming a total of 12 lives, 8 in Barrie.

The town of Barrie had 45,000 residents at the time, with around 800 left homeless afterwards as homes were destroyed by winds topping 415 km/h.
