Crime Prevention Week

It is Crime Prevention Week in Ontario, police focusing on helping residents and businesses make their communities safer. This year’s theme is Planning Together for Safer Communities encouraging combined efforts of police, government and communities to work together to address concerns, create strategies and decrease crime in Ontario. Locally:

OPP will use social media to highlight the importance of creating and strengthening partnerships to work toward safer and healthier communities

South Simcoe Police will be assisting seniors in making their homes safer and educating the public on its #LockItOrLoseIt campaign

Midland Police will be putting out a crime prevention tip on twitter every day during this week. In addition, flyers will be placed on local vehicles reminding owners to them to Lock It Or Lose It.

Barrie Police have several activities planned, including:

• Monday – Security Audits – Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED). Crime Prevention Services offers residential and commercial security audits, on a need basis, free of charge. Security audits are designed to identify areas of vulnerability and risk of your home or business, and strategies to minimize those risks. Crime Prevention Services will be downtown speaking with local businesses on safety and CPTED principals between noon and 3pm
• Tuesday – The Lock-It-Or-Lose-It program is a campaign designed to educate and encourage citizens to deter crimes of opportunity and take precautions to protect their vehicles and belongings from thieves. Officers from Barrie Police Service will visually examine parked vehicles at the city’s two GO Train Stations to ascertain if they are locked and that no valuables have been left in plain view. Vehicles receive a “pass/fail” in the form of a windshield wiper notice left behind to also offer simple theft prevention tips – 8am-4pm
• Wednesday – Crime Prevention Services will be at the Georgian Mall. Officers will be on hand to answer any questions you may have on crime prevention and offer tips to keep you and your family safe. Come check out the display and meet our officers – 10am-3pm
• Thursday – The Barrie Police Service has received numerous reports of various scams over the past year. These scams happened over the telephone, e-mail, door-to -door as well as identity theft. Crime Prevention Services is hoping to speak with seniors and their families to educate and protect citizens against these costly crimes. Presentations will be conducted Woods Park Retirement Home – 110 Lillian Crescent, Barrie at 10:15m and at Tollendale Village – 274 Hurst Drive, Barrie at 1:15pm
• Friday – Follow us on Twitter and re-tweet to win an iPad Mini (see NOTE below)
• Saturday – Crime Prevention Services will be at Cabela’s for the “Hometown Heroes” event, located at Park Place, Barrie. Crime Prevention and Tactical Support Unit Officers will be on hand to answer any questions you may have on crime prevention and firearm safety – 10am-2pm
