Tighter Controls Over Production Of Pain-Killer Fentanyl Coming

Drug now commonly cut into other street drugs

Health Canada is imposing stricter control over the ingredients used to make the pain killer fentanyl, subjecting it to the same controls as cocaine, heroin and other illegal drugs. Six chemicals used in the production of fentanyl will be made illegal. Fetanyl is generally prescribed in patch form to treat chronic pain but is being cut into other street drugs to make them more potent. The Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police, the Waterloo Region Crime Prevention Council and other groups said this week 2016 has been a record year for overdose alerts and seizures of so-called “bootleg” fentanyls and the RCMP has reported an increase in domestic production of illicit fentanyl.
