OPP Issue Warning About Unsafe Ice

Mild spell coming

Ontario Provincial Police always maintain that “no ice is safe ice”, but they are particularly concerned with the approach of milder weather. Noting we’ve had a warm start to the winter season, Orillia Constable Jim Edwards says what appears to be frozen “could in fact be ice that is not capable of supporting any weight at all.” As a result, outdoor enthusiasts are being asked to refrain from any ice-related activities until they see ice hut operators putting their huts out. These operators not only know the local waters, but will regularly test the ice thickness before allowing their ice huts to be brought out onto the ice and used. Remember: any ice-related rescue has the potential to put the lives of many first responders at great risk.
