19-Year Old Minnesota Teen Smashes Stereotypes
Halima Aden, a 19-year-old Somali-American woman from St. Cloud Minnesota, has become the first woman to wear a hijab and burkini in the Miss Minnesota USA beauty pageant.
Aden went all the way to the semifinals in the pageant that happened over the weekend and although she didn’t take home the crown she said that it wasn’t her goal.
“This pageant is so much more than just beauty. The whole message of Miss Minnesota USA is being confidently beautiful, so I didn’t think that I should allow my hijab to get in the way of me participating,” said Aden. “This is a great platform to show the world who I am…just because I’ve never seen a woman wearing a burkini in a pageant it doesn’t mean I don’t have to be the first.”
I assume that this isn’t the last we will be hearing about stereotype smashing Halima Aden.
