Bank Of Canada Releases Female Banknote Shortlist With A Barrie Connection

Bobbie Rosenfeld Of Five Women In The Running

A Barrie woman is among the five shortlisted to appear on a Canadian banknote. The Bank of Canada says Bobbie Rosenfeld is in the running, the Ukraine born, Barrie raised Olympian won gold and silver in 1928. Bobbie faces stiff competition, also on the list:

  • Viola Desmond (1914-1965) a black businesswoman who challenged segregation in her home province of Nova Scotia
  • Elsia MacGill (1905-1980) the world’s first female aircraft designer
  • E. Pauline Johnson (1861-1913) a poet credited with helping to shape Canadian literature
  • Idola Saint-Jean (1880-1945) a Quebec journalist who fought for women’s voting

The final decision comes December 8th for a banknote that will go into regular circulation in 2018.
