Barrie Student Carries Water Jug To Raise Funds For African Village

Drought-stricken region needs a well

Meet Marissa Druken, a grade 12 student at St Joseph’s Catholic High School in Barrie, who’s been lugging a 43 pound jug of water around with her during the school day, raising awareness and hoping to raise funds for a village in Africa. She travelled to Tanzania in May to help build a school; she’s raising this money to build a well in the drought-stricken area.  She says she’ll carry the jug – emulating the two-kilometre water walk village women make 12 times a day – until she raises the $5000 needed. Students have been stopping her in the hall to donate. She’s also accepting funds on a Go Fund Me account.
