Can Smartphones Stop Shark Attacks?

Experts discuss options in Australia

Seventy shark experts from around the world have gathered this week in Sydney Australia discussing how modern technology might help prevent shark attacks. There have been 13 attacks (compared with three in 2014) off the coast of New South Wales this year – one of them fatal; 19 attacks across the country. Electric fences and plastic barriers are being considered to keep sharks away from beach areas. Another possibility is smart buoys that can send text messages to lifeguards alerting that a shark is nearby.
