Firefighting Gets A Boost At Wasaga Beach

Town hiring more firefighters

The Town of Wasaga Beach is hiring six firefighters, expanding its full-time complement to twenty. This means the town’s two fire stations will be staffed by at least two firefighters 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Until now, there was often just one firefighter on duty, responding to calls for service alone. Town council approved the hirings Tuesday night, Mayor Brian Smith commented that “the challenges associated with firefighters working independently, often resulting in firefighters attending calls for service alone, has been an ongoing concern for a number of years. I am personally pleased to see this concern resolved, resulting in an enhanced level of service for the residents of Wasaga Beach, and a safe and effective department model for our firefighters. Additionally, there will be a considerable reduction in overtime costs with a full-time staffing complement of twenty firefighters.” Recruitment for the positions will begin
immediately with an anticipated start date of early May, 2016.
