List Getting Shorter For 1st Canadian Woman On Banknote

Barrie Central grad well back in poll

Nellie McClung, who fought for women’s rights in Canada, appears to be the front-runner to be the first Canadian woman to grace the front of a Canadian banknote. A cross-country poll found 27 per cent of respondents favour McClung. She is on a shortlist of 12 women being considered. Olympian and Barrie Central grad Bobbie Rosenfeld received 8 per cent support. The new bill is expected in 2018. Others being considered include: poet E. Pauline Johnson, author Gabrielle Roy, artist Pitseolak Ashoona, suffragette Idola Saint-Jean, humanitarian Lotta Hitschmanova.
