Low Loonie Means Higher Cell-Phone Bills
Critics call low dollar a 'convenient excuse'
Our lower dollar is going to mean higher cellphone bills for some. The major carriers say they’re going to adjust rate plans for new customers on certain plans to recover the cost of phones and other equipment they import. This surcharge is expected to add about $5 a month to some customer’s bills. Critics say the increases aren’t so much a reflection of rising costs, but of diminishing competition. John Lawford, executive director at the Public Interest Advocacy Centre says the fast-falling dollar is providing a convenient excuse to raise rates.
