New Cabinet Represents a Push To Gender Equality

A shakeup at Queen’s Park today, as Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne unveiled her new cabinet. Of the seven new ministers, five are women. With 30 cabinet seats overall, women make up 40 per cent of this cabinet, representing a recent push for gender parity in government, Deb Matthews still holds her position as deputy premier, but she’ll also be in charge of the advanced education and skills development portfolio, for example, while Liz Sandals will take up the president of the treasury board role, while handing the reins of the ministry of education over to MP Mitzie Hunter. The cabinet shakeup comes with just two years left until the next provincial election.
