No Place Like Mom And Dad’s Home For Canadians In Their 20s

Thirty years ago, 27 per cent of Canadians in their 20s were still living under mom and dad’s roof. As of 2011 that number had climbed to 42 per cent. And a majority – 90 per cent – were not paying rent, or helping with groceries and utilities. Statistics Canada has been watching this trend for years. Study authors note, “The proportion of young adults living with their parents not only varied by age and sex, but also across a range of socioeconomic and ethno-cultural characteristics.” Experts suggest staying in the childhood home can offer both emotional and financial support, and may help young Canadians save for their first home.
