Officer Sentenced To Six Years In Jail Following Yatim Shooting Death

James Forcillo Found Guilty of Attempted Murder

Toronto Police Constable James Forcillo will spend six years behind bars. A sentencing today at a Toronto courtroom, after the officer was in January found guilty of the attempted murder of Sammy Yatim. 18-year-old Yatim was shot and killed on a Toronto streetcar just over three years ago, by officer Forcillo, who was initially charged with second degree murder. Yatim’s death ignited a larger discussion of police policy on mental health and use of force, a discussion still going on at the command level of police services in our region, which resulted in enhanced officer training. The minimum sentence for Attempted Murder is 5 years in prison.
