That first day you bring your puppy home is an emotional day for both them and you.

It might take hours before they’ll settle down to sleep in unfamiliar surroundings, and the all-night barking will make sure you and your neighbours know all about it.

But a brilliant policy introduced by some companies allows people to take some time off fully paid to help their new family member acclimatize, or if they are sick and need looking after.

New Zealand bank ANZ is the latest business to offer it on a case-by-case basis and has allowed three people time off to look after a pet so far.
