Remembrance Day Still Relevant – Survey

But do young people understand the significance

A survey of Canadians finds a majority still believe Remembrance Day to be as relevant as it was just after World War I – 82 per cent think so, according to a poll by Historica Canada. There is concern, however, that young people do not properly appreciate and honour our war veterans. Just a few more than half of those asked think today’s youth are doing a good job of it; fewer than half think young people do not understand the sacrifices that were made by those who died in conflict. Wearing a poppy remains the most popular way for Canadians to mark the event – 79 per cent of respondents said they will wear one. More than 77 per cent said they will observe two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. on Remembrance Day; 32 per cent say they will attend a service. A vast majority (91 per cent) believe Canada should do more to honour its veterans.
