Tradition or passe? Is “going dutch” the way to go?

I get the feeling there won’t be a second date for these two, “Date goes horribly wrong after woman refuses to go Dutch“. But it begs the question, on a first date, should the man always be expected to pay or should both parties go out under the assumption that they’ll split the bill?
