WATCH: Kate McKinnon Sings “Hallelujah” on SNL

It was an emotional opening to SNL last night.

We’re used to Kate McKinnon making us laugh by doing the presidential debate spoofs in the SNL opening sketches with Alec Baldwin. But last night neither of those things happened. It was a very emotional opening to the show. Instead she sat at the piano in her pantsuit and paid tribute to Leonard Cohen by performing his classic “Hallelujah” while at the same time expressing her feelings regarding the election results.

“I did my best, it wasn’t much,” she sings, playing the piano on set. “I couldn’t feel, so I tried to touch. I told the truth, I didn’t come to fool ya. And even though it all went wrong, I’ll stand before the Lord of Song with nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Hallelujah.”

To finish, she addressed her viewers, many of whom likely voted for Hilary Clinton and said, “I’m not giving up, and neither should you,” referring to the election results.
