The latest ones have reportedly just opened at a shopping centre in Xi’an, Shaanxi Province.  And yes, they’re offensive as they ever were.

Pic shows: The women-only parking spaces A shopping centre is having to fend off accusations of sexism after it began providing women-only parking spaces that are both wider and pink. The specially designed spaces in the underground car park in Xiían, capital of north-western Chinaís Shaanxi Province, come complete with pot plants and pink paint, making them stand out from the rest. Besides, the "girly" design, however, the parking spaces are also 1.5 times wider than ordinary ones, measuring 3.75 metres (12 feet) in width compared to the regular 2.5 metres (8 feet). The pillars next to the parking spots also have a painted symbol of a woman, similar to those found on public restrooms, and the concrete has been covered with floral prints. According to officials at the shopping centre, there are now 12 women-only parking spaces, which is a small portion of its total of over 2,000. An unnamed spokesman was quoted as saying: "With 2,094 parking spaces, there are more than enough to satisfy the needs of our clients." However, netizens on Chinaís social media sites do not seem to be worrying about the lack of regular parking spaces, but rather the sexism highlighted by their creation, which seems to be suggest women are poor drivers. But surprisingly the women themselves think the new parking spaces are a great idea, saying that they have added to their overall shopping experience. One woman driver was quote as saying: "This is the first time in my many, many years that Iíve seen such a convenience. "There are always a lot of parking spaces in underground car parks, and theyíre usually very narrow, so unskilled drivers can only park after several attempts. The parking is perfect for women, because now we donít have to worry about clipping anything." Another shopping, who also applauded the new convenience, added: "Women bring their kids with them with they shop, so they have lots of things to take care of. "The new parking spaces make it easy to open doors without having to worry about damaging the car against a pillar or another parked vehicle." The shopping centre noted that the new spaces are not a form of discrimination, but rather a form of care and consideration. (ends)
