🤯 Common Knowledge Some of Us Somehow Missed

Published September 16, 2026

Have you ever learned something as a fully functioning adult and thought, “Wait... EVERYONE knew this?”

Someone on Reddit asked people to confess the pieces of “common knowledge” they somehow missed, and it turns out a lot of us have been confidently walking around with some pretty questionable information.

So here are a few things you probably know... but maybe don't.

1. 🐧 Penguins are birds.
They have feathers. They lay eggs. They're birds.
Apparently some people thought they were fish, presumably because anything wearing a tuxedo deserves privacy.

2. 🎸 The Beatles is a PUN.
It's “beetles” with BEAT, because... music.

Some people spent decades thinking the British just couldn't spell beetle.

3. 🍍 Pineapples don't grow on trees.
They grow from short plants close to the ground.

Honestly, I don't know what I pictured. Probably a palm tree decorated with pineapples like Christmas ornaments.

4. 🍗 Chicken tenders are called that because of the tenderloin.
There's actually a small strip of meat called the chicken tenderloin underneath the breast.

I just assumed they were called tenders because “chicken softies” didn't test well with consumers.

5. 🥒 Pickles are cucumbers. Yep. A pickle is basically a cucumber that's been through some stuff.

6. 🦌 Reindeer are REAL. They're not fictional Christmas animals. Reindeer actually exist. The flying part remains a Santa-specific upgrade package.

7. 🌎 Countries don't necessarily call themselves what WE call them.

Germany is Deutschland in German. Japan is Nihon or Nippon in Japanese.

Which means we've basically been giving entire countries nicknames and just assuming they're cool with it.

8. 🦫 A groundhog and a woodchuck are the SAME ANIMAL.

And here's another surprise: the name “woodchuck” has nothing to do with chucking wood. So that entire tongue twister has been spreading misinformation for generations.

And finally, the one that may ruin someone's morning...

9. 🐴 A pony is NOT a baby horse. Ponies are smaller horses with particular physical characteristics. A baby horse is a foal.

So if you've spent your entire life thinking ponies eventually grow up into full-sized horses...

Congratulations. Today is the day you find out you've been confidently wrong since kindergarten.
