A Third of Canadians Have a Side Hustle — Because Groceries Don’t Pay for Themselves

Are you picking up extra work to cover holiday shopping — or just daydreaming about selling a kidney? You’re not alone. A new survey found that nearly one in three people now have some kind of side hustle going on.
The most common gig? Selling stuff online. From handmade crafts and vintage finds to quirky print-on-demand T-shirts, Canadians are turning their hobbies (and clutter) into cash. The go-to platforms? Amazon, eBay, and even Walmart’s online marketplace.

The main reason for hustling on the side isn’t exactly shocking — 73% say it’s to help pay the bills. Another 14% say it’s less about money and more about passion (which, honestly, sounds adorable and slightly suspicious).
More than half started their side hustle just this past year, and about two-thirds say they spend less than 10 hours a week on it — proving you can be part of the gig economy without giving up your Netflix time.
💸 Moral of the story: Whether it’s crochet, candle-making, or reselling your old concert tees, everyone’s got a little entrepreneur energy these days — mostly fuelled by caffeine and the price of lettuce.
