I am Nancy Moses, an Innisfil resident of 16 years.

When my daughter was 2 years old, and running around the block, I signed up the kids from the street to run the Barrie Canada Day 1K Fun Run. My friend and I made up iron on shirts for the kids that said WILSON STREET KIDS. Once the race was over the kids kept asking me when is the next race, so I took it upon myself to create the WILSON STREET KIDS 1K FUN RUN in September 2010, because kids can do anything!

I put this race on for 10 years 2010-2019, as just something fun to do with the neighbourhood kids. Family and friends would come and each kid would get a custom t-shirt (dry-fit since 2011), a medal and of course food and drinks. I even set up a little water station, at the end of my driveway, so they can grab a sip of water half way through the two laps around my block of Wilson Street, Ceresino Crescent in Innisfil.

After being shut down for two years, and my daughter heading into high school, (local high school kids can volunteer for the race, in order to earn their community hours.) I wanted to put the race back on but in a bigger way. I wanted to raise money for a charity. Last year we chose Autism Ontario and raised $720 and this year we are sticking with the AUTISM theme and our charity is SHINING THROUGH CENTRES – who help families with Autistic children and youth. As my daughter was diagnosed at the age of 5 with High Functioning Autism, this is where my heart is.

This year, because I found some amazing local businesses to cover the costs of the race, we are able to donate up to $10 per registration to the charity, plus any donations that we gain through CanadaHelps.org where I have set up a page that will be sent directly to Shining Through Centres after the race on September 10, 2023.

We are hoping to double the money we raise this year, and in addition, my company World Financial Group, will be matching any donations that we raise.

We have taken all precautions and have a permit from the Town of Innisfil to shut down the streets during the race, to ensure safety for all participants, volunteers and sponsors. This is a great event for neighbours to get to know each other and for local businesses to advertise what they do. Bringing the community together and building children’s confidence has always been my goal and now we can help a wonderful charity at the same time.
