πŸŽ™οΈ R.I.P. COLUMBIA HOUSE... THE ORIGINAL SUBSCRIPTION TRAP πŸ“€πŸ“¬

Published August 18, 2026

If you grew up in the '80s or '90s, prepare yourself because another little piece of our childhood is officially disappearing. Columbia House is finally winding down after 71 years.

And the first question everyone our age is asking is... "WAIT... COLUMBIA HOUSE WAS STILL A THING?!"

Yep.

The company says it'll stop accepting new orders after September 15th, finally bringing an end to the business many of us remember for those glorious mail-in offers promising a ridiculous number of CDs for practically nothing.

Teenage us saw that and thought we'd discovered the greatest financial loophole in human history.

"TWELVE CDs FOR A PENNY?! Mom, grab your chequebook. We're about to bankrupt these idiots!"

Meanwhile, our parents were standing behind us saying... "READ. THE. FINE. PRINT."

Because those practically-free CDs came with a commitment to buy more music later at regular prices. Suddenly that penny had dependants.

Columbia House actually dates back to 1955, starting as the Columbia Record Club before becoming a massive mail-order business for records, tapes, CDs and eventually DVDs.

It even survived bankruptcy in 2015 and kept reinventing itself, eventually moving away from music altogether.

And somehow it lastedΒ 71 years. Honestly, Columbia House prepared an entire generation for modern life.

It taught us about subscriptions. It taught us about contracts. It taught us to read the fine print.

And most importantly, it taught us the sheer panic of realizing you forgot to send back the little card saying... "NO, I DO NOT WANT THIS MONTH'S SELECTION."

Farewell, Columbia House.

Thanks for the music, the memories...

and the first bill we ever had to hide from our parents. πŸ“€πŸ˜‚
