Meet Chlorella: The Superfood That Used to Treat Sewage

Published March 26, 2025

Move over, kale—there’s a new nutrient-packed powerhouse on the block, and it comes with an unexpected backstory.

Introducing Chlorella vulgaris, a freshwater algae that has long been used to clean up wastewater but is now being rebranded as the next big superfood. It’s already being compared to spirulina, another blue-green algae that’s gained a cult following in the wellness world.

Why All the Hype?

Chlorella is loaded with nutrients, including:

✅ Protein (it’s over 50% protein!)
✅ Omega-3 fatty acids
✅ Vitamins & minerals like B12, B6, C, D, folate, iron, zinc, and magnesium
✅ Antioxidants that help with detoxification, immunity, and even lowering cholesterol

Some studies even suggest it could help fight depression—which is more than we can say for most trendy health foods.

But... Does It Taste Good?

Not exactly. Chlorella has been described as earthy, bitter, and even fishy—so don’t expect it to taste like your favourite seaweed salad.

💡 How to Eat It: Mix it into smoothies, juice, or even baking batter to mask the flavour.

Would you give this algae a try, Or does its past as a wastewater treatment agent make you think twice? 🌱💚
