There could soon be warning labels on gas pumps, similar to what we see on cigarette packages. Environmental group Our Horizon was pitching Barrie City Council on the idea last night. Executive Director Ron Shirkey says, “We tend to talk about climate change in the context of the oil sands or pipelines or offshore drilling…we tend to upstream the problem and, I think in doing so, we further distance ourselves from it. What this idea does, simply, is…make us feel more connected to the problem.” The stickers would highlight the environmental impact of filling up the tank. While other municipalities have endorsed the program, City Council made no commitment last night.
