Published February 27, 2025

Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman, his wife Betsy Arakawa, and their dog were discovered dead in their New Mexico residence, authorities confirmed on Thursday.

While no foul play is suspected, officials have not disclosed the circumstances surrounding their deaths, stating that an investigation is ongoing.

According to Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Denise Avila, deputies conducted a welfare check at the home around 1:45 p.m. and found Hackman, 95, along with his wife and pet.

Hackman, known for his reclusive lifestyle, had largely stepped away from Hollywood following his retirement roughly two decades ago. Unlike many in the industry, his departure from acting was permanent, with only occasional appearances at award shows.

The acclaimed actor was nominated for five Academy Awards, securing wins for The French Connection and Unforgiven—an impressive 21 years apart. His filmography also includes his portrayal of Lex Luthor in Superman alongside Christopher Reeve, as well as roles in Enemy of the State with Will Smith, Antz, and The Firm with Tom Cruise.

Authorities have yet to provide further details on the cause of death as investigations continue.
