☕ Is Your Office Coffee Maker Putting Your Heart at Risk?

Published March 25, 2025

If your morning cup of coffee is the only thing getting you through the workday, you might want to take a closer look at what’s brewing. A new study from Sweden suggests that your office coffee machine could be raising your cholesterol levels, putting your heart health at risk.

What’s the Problem?

Researchers tested 14 workplace coffee machines and found they contained higher levels of cafestol and kahweol—compounds that can increase LDL ("bad") cholesterol. The culprit? The type of filter used.

🔹 Paper filters (found in many home coffee makers) trap these compounds.
🔹 Metal filters (common in office machines) let them through.
🔹 French press & percolated coffee had lower levels.
🔹 Espresso levels varied widely.

Should You Quit Coffee?

Not necessarily! Coffee has many benefits, like reducing the risk of cancer, dementia, and even premature death. But if you’re drinking office coffee daily, you might want to switch to a paper-filtered brew or opt for instant coffee or pods to help keep your heart in check.
