West Philly Honors Will Smith With His Own Street!

Published March 27, 2025

Will Smith just got his street in West Philadelphia—literally!

The Oscar-winning actor and Grammy-winning rapper returned to his hometown on March 26 for a special ceremony where 59th Street, near his old high school, was officially renamed "Will Smith Way."

"Philly, I Love You"

During the event, Smith reflected on the life lessons he learned growing up in Philly.

“Nobody gets an easy ride. That was one of the things these streets of Philadelphia taught me: that there's nothing wrong with a hard day's work.”

Among the crowd was one of his former teachers, who first called him “Prince Charming”—a nickname that eventually evolved into The Fresh Prince.

“The name ‘The Fresh Prince’ was coined in that building,” Smith said, pointing to Overbrook High School. “I added the ‘fresh’ because it was hip-hop slang."

New Music is coming!

Smith is also making a return to music, dropping his fifth studio album, "Based on a True Story," this Friday—his first in nearly 20 years!
