New Monopoly Ditches Cash for an App—And Parents Have Feelings About It

Published March 6, 2025

Monopoly is getting a major update, leaving paper money in the past. Hasbro has announced a new version of the classic board game that eliminates cash and math, using a smartphone app to track transactions instead.

How It Works

Instead of the traditional banker role, players will use Monopoly App Banking, a mobile app that manages money, property ownership, and deals—no counting required.

The app will be free to download, while the physical board game is set to launch this August for $24.99.

The board itself is getting a modern makeover, replacing classic spots like Park Place and Boardwalk with kid-friendly properties such as:
🚀 A rocket launch pad
🌕 The moon
🍫 A chocolate factory
🎢 A VR roller coaster
🦖 A dinosaur park

Parents Are Split

Some parents love the change, saying it makes the game faster and easier for kids to play—plus, no more accidental math mistakes (or sneaky players stealing from the bank 👀).

Others, however, aren’t thrilled. Critics argue that this new Monopoly takes away one of the last non-digital activities kids enjoy, turning a classic board game into more screen time.

What do you think? Is Monopoly App Banking the future, or are we losing a classic? 🎲
