Spotify Is About to Start Calling Out AI Artists 🤖🎵

Spotify is about to make it a little easier to figure out whether your new favourite artist is an actual person... or someone who has never experienced the thrill of playing to six people at a Tuesday-night open mic.

Starting in mid-September, Spotify says it will begin adding an “AI Persona” label to artist profiles where the performer’s identity is generated by artificial intelligence and doesn’t represent a real person.

Basically, it’s a musical nutrition label:

Contains: 0% human singer. May contain traces of robot.

The people behind these AI artists will be encouraged to voluntarily identify their creations through Spotify for Artists.

Spotify says it also has ways to identify AI personas that aren’t voluntarily disclosed.

Once an artist gets the AI Persona label, you’ll be able to see it on their artist banner, in their “About” section, in search results and beside their songs when they pop up in playlists.

And there’s another fairly significant change.

AI Persona artists will no longer be eligible for Spotify’s algorithmic recommendations, unless you already follow them.

So Spotify won’t randomly slide DJ Prompt Engineer and the ChatGPTs into your Discover Weekly.

The move comes as the music industry continues trying to figure out what to do with AI-generated music, especially as it gets harder for the average listener to tell what’s human and what was created with artificial intelligence.

And really, I appreciate the label.

Because if I’m going to become emotionally attached to a singer, buy their merch and spend $400 trying to see them in concert...

I’d at least like them to have a pulse.
