Your Takeout Containers Could Be Harming Your Heart—Even Without Microwaving

Published February 27, 2025

We all love the convenience of takeout, but a new study out of China suggests that your go-to plastic containers could be seriously damaging your heart—and you don’t even have to microwave them.

The Study: What’s the Damage?

Researchers tested the effects of placing hot liquid in plastic takeout lids and then exposing rats to that liquid over three months. Their findings were alarming:

❌ Inflamed gut biome (which increases the risk of heart disease)
❌ Significant damage to the heart muscle (myocardial tissue)
❌ Higher risk of congestive heart failure

And here’s the kicker—this happened even without microwaving the plastic. Just placing hot food or liquid into these containers was enough to release harmful compounds.

Should You Stop Ordering Takeout?

Not necessarily, but you can take steps to reduce exposure:
✅ Transfer your food to glass or ceramic plates before eating.
✅ Avoid storing hot leftovers in plastic containers.
✅ Use BPA-free and food-grade plastic whenever possible.

While takeout is a lifesaver on busy nights, your heart might thank you for rethinking those plastic containers. 🚫🍽️❤️
