Should We Bring Back “Dangerous” Playgrounds? The Netherlands Thinks So!
Forget the soft spaces—some parents believe today’s playgrounds are too safe and kids are becoming too soft. In the Netherlands, they’re flipping the script by making play areas less boring and a little riskier.
A new proposal aims to reintroduce adventure into outdoor play, allowing kids to:
🔥 Play with fire and water
🪵 Sword-fight with sticks
🔨 Build with hammers, rope, and even knives
🤼 Wrestle and take physical risks
The idea isn’t to endanger kids, but rather to help them build confidence, problem-solving skills, and resilience. Advocates argue that "risk-taking play" teaches children about boundaries and social interactions, while also making outdoor activities more engaging than endless screen time.

Of course, there are concerns—parents worry about injuries, supervision, and liability—but proponents say a few bumps and scrapes are just part of growing up.
So, what do you think? Should playgrounds be riskier and more exciting, or should we keep the soft spaces? 🛝🔥
