30 Years After Selena’s Murder, Her Killer is Up for Parole

It’s been 30 years since the tragic murder of music icon Selena Quintanilla-Pérez, and now, the woman responsible—Yolanda Saldívar—is up for parole for the first time.
Saldívar, now 64 years old, has served three decades of a life sentence in Texas for the 1995 killing of the beloved Tejano star. According to the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles, her case is officially under review, though there’s no set date for when a decision will be announced.
Selena’s Legacy Lives On
Even though she was taken at just 23 years old, Selena’s influence has only grown. She was the first female Tejano artist to win a Grammy in 1994, and her posthumous English-language crossover album, Dreaming of You, became a massive hit. Songs like “I Could Fall in Love” and “Dreaming of You” remain classics.
In 1997, her biopic, "Selena," starring Jennifer Lopez, cemented her as a cultural icon—a status that still holds strong for Mexican Americans, Latinos, Texans, and fans worldwide.
