Duncan Sheik, Singer Behind ‘Barely Breathing’ and Tony-Winning Broadway Composer, Dies at 56

Duncan Sheik, the singer-songwriter who gave us the '90s hit “Barely Breathing” before finding success on Broadway, has died at the age of 56.

His mother, Suzanne Sheik, confirmed to The New York Times that the musician died following cardiac arrest.

Earlier in the week, Sheik’s family had shared an update on Instagram, revealing that he had been hospitalized and was in critical but stable condition.

From '90s Radio Favourite to Broadway Success

For anyone who grew up listening to the radio in the late '90s, “Barely Breathing” is one of those songs that can instantly take you back.

Released in 1996 as part of Sheik’s self-titled debut album, the emotional pop-rock track became his signature hit. It spent an impressive 55 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance in 1998. 

Although Sheik continued recording music, including his 2001 album Phantom Moon, he eventually found a new creative home in musical theatre.

In 2006, he helped bring Spring Awakening to Broadway, writing the music for the coming-of-age rock musical alongside lyricist Steven Sater.

The production became a major success, winning eight Tony Awards in 2007, including Best Musical. Sheik personally took home two Tony Awards for Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations. The show also earned a Grammy for Best Musical Show Album. 

He went on to contribute music to several other stage productions, including American Psycho and Alice by Heart.

Sheik never completely stepped away from recording. His final studio album, Claptrap, was released in 2022.

Remembering Duncan Sheik

In a statement shared on his official Instagram account, Sheik’s family remembered him not only for his musical accomplishments but also for the important roles he played in their lives as a father, husband, son, brother and friend.

Sheik is survived by his wife, Nora Ariffin, and their daughter, Ines. 

For a generation of music lovers, his legacy will always include that unmistakable opening to “Barely Breathing,” a song that helped define the sound of '90s adult alternative radio.

And for Broadway audiences, his work on Spring Awakening will remain an important part of modern musical theatre history.
