“Dance the Night” By Dua Lipa:  Finding Freedom in the Night

The Story Behind The Song 

“Dance The Night” by Dua Lipa was the lead single for the Barbie movie soundtrack and the centerpiece of a 60-person dance number featuring the entire cast. 

Mark Ronson composed the music for the film. The film’s director, Greta Gerwig, wanted a disco song to play during Barbie’s house party. Using a playlist Gerwig sent, Ronson created a track that was used during dance rehearsals. 

Ronson shared in an interview that he “didn’t want to make the Barbie song too bubble-gummy or something that would have been really obvious.” The result was a track that would become “Dance The Night.” 

It was Ronson who got Dua Lipa on board for the song. He slid into her Instagram DMs to chat about it saying: 

“There’s a song with a huge 60-person dance number with the whole cast – I only have the track so far, as they started rehearsals, but I would f–king love it if you would consider co-writing and starring on it … I honestly think the movie’s going to be incredible.” 

Dua Lipa agreed to record the song and even made a cameo appearance in the movie as the mermaid Barbie. 

The song peaked at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on Canada’s Top 40 & Hot AC.

The Offical Music Video

The music video for “Dance The Night” complements the song perfectly. It shows Dua Lipa and a diverse group of dancers taking center stage in a mesmerizing dance performance, with cut-ins from the Barbie movie. 

The video captures the electrifying energy of the song, highlighting the transformative power of dance and music. It also features a cameo appearance from director Greta Gerwig who admires Lipa’s performance.
