The Great Orillia Flag Challenge Is Here — Let the Flag Wars Begin 🇨🇦

Get ready to channel your inner Canadian because Orillia is about to look extra patriotic.
A brand-new initiative called The Great Orillia Flag Challenge is launching just in time for Canada Day, and it’s a red-and-white neighbourhood showdown. Approved by the city council back in March, this friendly competition is all about getting residents to come together, get creative, and celebrate Canada’s 158th birthday in the most flag-filled way possible.

So, What’s the Challenge?
From June 30 to July 6, Orillians are encouraged to team up with their neighbours to decorate their homes with as many red-and-white Canadian flags as humanly (or patriotically) possible. Think lawn flags, balcony flags, window flags —if it’s visible from the street and it’s a red-and-white maple leaf, it counts.
But this isn’t just about flag hoarding. It’s a team sport.
Here’s How It Works:
- You compete on a street, not as an individual.
- Only red-and-white Canadian flags will be counted.
- Flags must be visible from the end of the driveway or street (for apartments and condos).
- Every flag counts toward your street’s total — but the average number of flags per home is what matters (so quality AND quantity).
- All flags need to be up by June 30 and stay up until July 6.
- Your local councillor will do the rounds to count flags during the week.
- The street with the highest flag-to-house ratio will be crowned the official Flag Challenge Champions.
Want In?
To enter, someone from your street needs to email your ward councillor and register your neighbourhood. Yes, it’s that simple.
This is your moment, Orillia — let’s make it festive, let’s make it friendly, and let’s make it very Canadian. 🍁
Will your street be the most maple-leafed in town? Time to find out.
