Ontario Is One Of The Angriest Places In Canada

No kidding!
Published November 24, 2023

Canadians are known for their politeness, but according to a new poll by Pollara, that stereotype is being thrown out the window. The "rage index" hit a record high in November, with Ontario residents leading the charge in frustration.

This isn't your average grumbling – we're talking full-on rage! Pollara's findings link this surge in anger to two key factors: pocketbook woes and government actions.

The Perfect Storm of Frustration

Ontarians are facing a double whammy – rising costs of living and the ongoing Greenbelt scandal that rocked the provincial government. Dan Arnold, Pollara's chief strategy officer, highlights the financial strain as a major driver of anger. "People are feeling the sting in their wallets," he says.

News and International Conflict Add Fuel to the Fire

While global conflicts like those in Ukraine and the Middle East contribute to Canadians' overall frustration, personal finances are seen as a more immediate concern.

Anger Lingers Over Greenbelt Scandal

While outrage over the Greenbelt controversy has softened slightly, a significant portion of Ontarians (57%) remain unhappy with the provincial government. This level of disapproval is a red flag for any administration.

Alberta's Fury Fueled by Pension Plan

The poll also reveals anger brewing in Alberta. Premier Danielle Smith's proposal to exit the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) has sparked outrage, particularly among older residents.

Federal Politics Feeling the Heat

The Rage Index doesn't stop at provincial borders. Supporters of the federal Conservatives are particularly disgruntled with the government, the economy, and the direction the country seems to be headed. Even Liberal and NDP voters are showing signs of frustration, which could complicate the current political landscape.

Is Ontario the Angriest Place in Canada?

While Ontario takes the silver medal on the national rage podium (Alberta takes the gold!), these findings paint a clear picture: Canadians are growing increasingly frustrated. Whether it's rising costs, government actions, or global issues, the simmering anger has the potential to boil over.
