People Are Speaking 3,000 Fewer Words Per Day—Here’s Why

Published February 6, 2025

It’s not your imagination—people are talking less than they used to. A new study reveals that we now speak around 13,000 words per day, down from 16,000 in 2005—that’s about 3,000 fewer words daily!

📱 The Culprit? Digital Communication
Instead of long phone calls or in-person chats, texting, DMs, and social media have taken over. Why spend 20 minutes on the phone when a quick “K” or “Got it” will do?

💬 Do Women Really Talk More Than Men?
Yes, but not by much:

  • Women: 13,350 words per day
  • Men: 11,950 words per day

That 1,000-word difference is minor compared to individual variations—some people barely hit 100 words a day, while others go beyond 120,000!

🧠 Why Does It Matter?
Experts warn that less conversation can impact mental and physical health, much like a lack of exercise or sleep. Social interaction is essential for well-being, so maybe a “10,000-word goal” will become the next big thing—just like step counting!

In fact, new wearable tech is being developed to track conversation time (without recording content)—basically, a Fitbit for talking.

Would you try one? Or are you happy with your current word count? 🗣️📉
