PETA Wants to Replace Punxsutawney Phil with a "Weather Reveal" Cake
Imagine if Groundhog Day was less about a groundhog seeing its shadow and more like a gender reveal party—but for the weather. That’s exactly what PETA is suggesting this year.
Every February 2nd, PETA protests the use of Punxsutawney Phil, arguing that the tradition of pulling a live groundhog from its burrow is outdated and stressful for the animal. Over the years, they’ve pitched alternative ways to predict the weather, but this year’s idea might be the wildest yet.
A Vegan Cake Instead of a Groundhog?
PETA is offering to retire Phil to a “reputable animal sanctuary” in exchange for a giant vegan ‘Weather Reveal’ cake each year. The concept?
- If the inside of the cake is blue, there will be six more weeks of winter.
- If it’s pink, expect an early spring.
(Why blue and pink? Who knows.)

Will This Happen?
This isn't likely to happen...The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club has no plans to replace their 140-year-old tradition with a baked good. Still, it’s another headline-worthy attempt from PETA to spark conversation about animal welfare.
Would you trade Phil for a cake? Or is this just too ridiculous to consider? 🍰
