Loblaws Wants To Sell Weed

Move over Wine Wrack- it’s weed wrack time…
Published January 29, 2024

Will it be sold under the no-name brand? Edible Decedent Chocolate Chuck Cookies anyone?

Grocery store giant Loblaws has been pushing the province for legal changes that would allow the supermarket giant to enter the bud business.

The Ford government has been looking for ways to dramatically scale up the number of licensed pot shops in Ontario…

According to internal government documents, Loblaws held meetings with Ford government officials, including the Attorney General’s office, to request changes around how the weed market works in Ontario.

Currently there are rules that restrict the sale of weed inside stores where other items such as snacks and chocolate could be available for purchase. Loblaws is pushing for a store within the store- Like the Wine Wrack…

According to available documents, Loblaws had been pushing for the change since at least 2019…

Remember when Shoppers was a consideration for weed?

Currently The retail space “must be enclosed by walls separating it from any other commercial establishment or activity” which prevents the sale of cannabis products inside grocery stores.

Loblaws is pushing to change this rule…That change could make it easier for the grocery store, which also owns Shoppers Drugmart, to enter the cannabis market. Because Shoppers Drug Mart sells medical cannabis, provincial documents explain, Loblaws is limited in how it can sell weed for general consumption.
