THE 10 WORST FOODS FOR GRILLING -DON'T EVEN TRY

Published June 11, 2025

Grilling season is here, but if any of these foods are making their way onto your barbecue list, it might be time to hand over the tongs to someone who knows what they're doing.

A trending list is warning us about the top foods you should never put on the grill. So, if you're planning to grill these, maybe reconsider, or at least invite a grilling expert to supervise.

Here are the 10 foods you should skip when prepping for your next BBQ:

  1. Soft cheeses – Don’t even think about topping your burger with brie or mozzarella while it’s still on the grill. Soft cheeses melt immediately and will slide off faster than you can say “Oops.” And don’t place them directly on the grill—unless you’re looking to start a cheese fire.

  2. Delicate fish fillets – Delicate fish like cod or tilapia will stick to the grill and fall apart, making a mess. Wrap them in foil to keep them intact if you want to grill them.

  3. Leafy greens – Grilled spinach? Nope. Try putting any leafy greens on the grill, and you’ll end up with a sad, limp, smoky mess. Save the veggies for a grill basket or just grill them whole.

  4. Raw eggs in the shell – No, this isn’t a joke. If you try to grill eggs in their shells, they will explode—loudly, messily, and dangerously. Not the best way to impress your guests.

  5. Bacon – Bacon on the grill sounds good in theory, but it doesn’t cook evenly and tends to tear. Use your oven instead. If you want to achieve that smoky flavour, grill it on foil for just 30 seconds after it’s cooked. No direct flames allowed.

  6. Soft tofu – Unless you're grilling with something strong enough to withstand the grilling flames, soft tofu is going to fall apart on you. Stick to extra-firm tofu if you want it to hold up to the heat.

  7. Frozen shrimp – Do yourself a favour and thaw it overnight in the fridge. If you don’t, you’ll end up with crispy outsides and frozen middles, which isn’t anyone’s idea of a good shrimp.

  8. Extra-lean burgers – Want your burger to be dry and tasteless? Go ahead and throw on some extra-lean beef. The grill will suck out all the moisture. Go for something fattier, like 20% fat beef, for a juicy burger that won’t leave you thirsty.

  9. Thick root vegetables – Things like beets and big carrots need to soften up before they’re ready for the grill. Throw them on there and you’ll end up with burnt outsides and raw insides. Roast or pre-cook them first to get the best results.

  10. Watermelon – This one was trendy for a hot minute on TikTok, but grilled watermelon tends to fall apart and make a sticky, messy situation. If you’re determined to try it, cut thick slices and leave the rind on for a more stable grilling experience.

So there you have it. Let’s keep the explosions, soggy greens, and sad bacon off the grill and save your barbecue for the stuff that grills well. 🌭🔥
