đ 39% of People Say Theyâve Had âThe One That Got Awayâ â And the Rest Are Lying

If youâve ever found yourself scrolling through an exâs social media at 2 a.m. with a glass of wine and a playlist called âWhat Couldâve Beenâ â congratulations, youâre in good company.
According to a new survey, 39% of people admit theyâve had âthe one that got away.â
And before you ask â yes, Katy Perry wrote her hit song about Josh Groban. (He apparently called her âthe one that got away,â too. Okay, fine, he didnât. But he totally couldâve. He seems like the type to light a candle and journal about it.)
đ The Numbers Behind the Nostalgia
The survey broke things down like this:
- 11% said thereâs currently someone they consider âthe one that got away.â (Which, letâs be honest, probably means they still check that personâs Instagram Stories.)
- 28% said they used to feel that way about someone. Translation: theyâve either healed or finally blocked them.
- 46% claim theyâve never felt this way. (Sure, Jan.)
- And 16% said they âdonât know,â which feels like code for, âIâm not emotionally available enough to unpack that right now.â

â¤ď¸ Men Feel It More (Allegedly)
Men were slightly more likely to admit to having a âone that got away.â
It was also more common among Millennials and Gen Xâers â people old enough to have survived MSN Messenger heartbreak and mix tapes that said âFor You (Donât Cry)â.
Gen Z and Boomers didnât report it as often.
Maybe Gen Z hasnât lived long enough for a full-blown heartbreak yetâŚ
And Boomers? They probably married the one that got away back in â82 and have been tolerating them ever since.
𼲠The Real Takeaway
âThe one that got awayâ doesnât always mean youâre still pining for someone â sometimes itâs just a reminder that timing, geography, and emotional maturity rarely line up at the same time.
Or, as every rom-com ever has taught us: if itâs meant to be, the universe will make it happen⌠probably right after you stop stalking them on Facebook.
