BE HONEST: DO YOU ACTUALLY READ THE INSTRUCTION MANUAL? πŸ“–πŸ”§

Published August 11, 2026

There's a new survey that proves there are basically two types of people in this world: those who read the instruction manual, and those who immediately throw it in the garbage and announce, "How hard can it be?"

Spoiler alert: those are also the people swearing at an air fryer 20 minutes later.

A new poll asked people how much of the instruction manual they read when they get a new appliance or device.

Only 14 per cent claim they read the entire thing.

Twenty-nine per cent read most of it, while 43 per cent skim through a few sections, presumably stopping when they find the sentence that explains why the red light won't stop blinking.

Then there are the braveΒ eight per cent who read absolutely nothing. They open the box, plug it in and let instinct take the wheel.

Interestingly, Boomers are more likely to read the instructions than Gen Z. About 16 per cent of Boomers read the whole manual, compared to 12 per cent of Gen Z.

Which is funny considering younger generations love complaining about having to teach their parents how technology works.

Maybe Dad actually DID read the manual. He just needs you to explain what "pair your device via Bluetooth" means.

And let's be honest, instruction manuals have changed. When we were kids, buying a toaster came with three pages:

1. Plug in toaster.
2. Insert bread.
3. Don't put fork in toaster.

Now you buy a refrigerator and need to download an app, create an account, connect it to Wi-Fi, verify your email and agree to a 47-page privacy policy before it'll make ice.

I think most of us operate on the same system:

Step 1: Don't read instructions.

Step 2: Try it ourselves.

Step 3: Get angry.

Step 4: Google it.

Step 5: Watch a 14-year-old on YouTube explain in 38 seconds what we've been trying to figure out for an hour.

And only when all of that fails do we finally dig through the recycling bin looking for the manual.

Which is usually right underneath the receipt we also suddenly desperately need. πŸŽ™οΈπŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦
