FORGET LITTLE FREE LIBRARIES... START YOUR OWN BLOCKBUSTER 📼🍿

You've probably seen those Little Free Libraries popping up around Simcoe County.

You take a book, leave a book, discover something new. Very wholesome.

But what if reading sounds like... a lot of work? Enter the Free Blockbuster.

It's basically the same idea, except instead of books, people stock a little neighbourhood box with DVDs, VHS tapes and other physical media that anyone can borrow for free.

Take a movie. Watch it. Bring it back. Maybe leave another one behind.

It's like Netflix...but you have to put pants on and walk outside.

The idea has been around for several years, with Vancouver's Matthew Reed among those who helped bring the concept to Canada.

And yes, the boxes lean HARD into the old Blockbuster nostalgia, complete with the familiar blue and yellow colours.

So if you're suddenly craving microwave popcorn and remembering the panic of trying to return Mrs. Doubtfire before the late fees kicked in...You're the target demographic.

HOW TO START YOUR OWN FREE BLOCKBUSTER

1. Build a box.
People have converted old newspaper boxes, cabinets and other weather-resistant containers.

2. Give it the Blockbuster treatment.
Blue. Yellow. Maximum '90s nostalgia.

3. Fill it with movies you're willing to never see again.
DVDs, VHS tapes or other physical media can go inside.

And this is important:

Don't put Grandma's irreplaceable copy of Dirty Dancing in there.

The idea is that people return what they borrow, but we're operating on the honour system here.

4. Let the neighbourhood know it's there.

Then sit back and see what happens.

Honestly, I would LOVE to see these popping up around Simcoe County.

Although I also want the authentic Blockbuster experience. You walk up on Friday night looking for the newest movie...

and every copy is gone except Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2. Now THAT'S nostalgia.
