FOUR COFFEE MISTAKES YOU'RE PROBABLY MAKING ☕️

Published August 24, 2026

Before you've had your morning coffee is probably not the ideal time to tell you you're making your coffee wrong...

But here we are.

Coffee experts say there are a few common mistakes that could be messing with your morning cup.

And considering some of us are emotionally dependent on that first coffee, we should probably get this right.

1. BUYING TOO MUCH COFFEE AT ONCE

Buying the Costco-sized bag might save you money, but coffee beans lose freshness over time.

The recommendation is to buy roughly what you'll use within a month.

Which sounds reasonable.

Except Costco doesn't sell “a month's worth.”

Costco sells “coffee for you and the three generations that follow.”

2. USING WATER STRAIGHT FROM THE TAP

Because coffee is mostly water, the quality of your water can make a noticeable difference.

If your tap water has a strong chlorine or mineral taste, filtered water may give you a better cup.

Although here in Canada, let's acknowledge something:

We're pretty lucky when it comes to tap water.

So don't panic and start making your morning coffee with imported glacier water.

3. OVERDOING IT WITH THE SOAP

Your coffee pot needs to be cleaned, obviously, but leftover soap residue can affect the flavour.

For routine cleaning, make sure everything is thoroughly rinsed, and follow your machine's directions for regular deep cleaning and descaling.

Because there is a difference between:

“Don't leave soap residue in your coffee maker”

and

“Never clean your coffee maker.”

Nice try, Dale.

4. ALWAYS DRINKING YOUR COFFEE ON THE RUN

This one isn't really about taste. It's about slowing down.

Instead of treating coffee as the caffeinated liquid required to transform you from “don't speak to me” into a functioning member of society, try actually sitting down and enjoying it.

Take 10 minutes. Talk to your partner. Chat with a coworker. Sit quietly.

Enjoy the coffee while it's actually hot.

Because nothing says adulthood quite like making a beautiful, fresh cup of coffee at 7 a.m...

and finding it untouched in the microwave at 2:30.
