WATCH: South African Firefighters Grand Alberta Arrival

Firefighters Flown In To Battle Continuing Blaze

Despite Fort McMurray being out of harms way wildfires continue to ravage Alberta, with over 500,000 hectares having been burnt so far this year. Many have asked why BC hasn’t stepped in to help, but they are fighting massive blazes of their own. In fact, they’ve spent over half the province’s firefighting budget for 2016 and it’s not even summer yet.

Instead Alberta has flown in 280 enthusiastic firefighters from South Africa, who made a grand entrance with this song and dance. Singing isn’t just a hobby, it’s a part of their firefighting tradition. “It gives us moral courage, it gives us teamwork,” said Khomt Alucie, one of the firefighters. “If we become tired in the fire we sing.”

Firefighting in South Africa seems like a cool job! Where do we sign up?

We thank the firefighters of South Africa for their support, and wish them a safe and successful journey!
