  1. City Needs An Extra Million, But Not From You

The cost to redevelop Memorial Square in downtown Barrie has increased by more than a million dollars due to added infrastructure spending to “ make sure it’s right,” says Councillor Rose Romita. But the city won’t be reaching into your pocket for the extra case. It’ll be made up through fundraising, BIA contributions and funds from the city’s Tax Capital Reserve Fund. When completed, the new square and Meridian Place will be an expansive gathering place complete with a stage.Read more about that here.

 

2. Parking Passes Coming to Barrie

Need to park, but have no change, credit or debit card for the meter? Barrie City Council has approved an annual parking pass pilot project. Details have yet to be worked out in terms of price. City staff will report back to Council in June and the project could be in place by summer.

 

3. Loblaws Expansion Underway

Loblaws plans to build 50 new stores in Canada this year, and renovate 150. The move is expected to create 5000 new jobs in the retail sector. Loblaw has yet to say where the new stores will be built.

 

4. New Invention from Apple

What’s new? Apple has filed a patent for a keyless laptop keyboard. It’s a force touch pad similar to what’s found in the iPhone 6 and other devices.

 

5. Another Playoff Win for the Barrie Colts

Barrie Colts came from behind last night to beat North Bay 3-2 in overtime. They lead the series 2 games to none. Game 3 is tonight in North Bay
